Good Grief Finale

Sat down at the desk and did the final touches to the Good Grief kit.  After a talk and some kidding with the guys who created the kit, online and at Jersey Fest,  the 3 what I thought were palm fronds (why ony 3 leaves on the base?) turned out that they were actually Woodstock's feathers. I guess snoopy got hungry enough. Glad I didn't decide to sculpt a little bird for Snoop...  So those got a dry brushing of yellow.

Next was I was informed that the blanket wasn't army surplus as "my story" imagined, but was Linus' blanket. Linus' blanket was blue. So I felt the need to change that.
Next up was I took the cord that was provided in the kit, soaked it in brown wash,  and did a wrapping so the baseball bat and his cooking pot no long just magically hung off the backpack.  Afterward the rope got a highlighting of V's Dark Sand.

I couldn't leave well enough along and I added tiny leaves to the dead bushes, and even left some on the ground.

I finished off painting the rifle and the last step was coloring the wrapping. The base coat being Dark Sand, with an Ivory highlight and then some camo with V's Olive Green.

Finally I wasn't in a mood to mess with the seamline that resulted from gluing the hand to his arm so I just took some Aves and created a wristband.

With that I was done. It was a nicely engineered kit and a pleasure to work on. Thanks for looking.

Good Grief 4

Didn't have much time today, but I did make headway. With the batteries finally in the UV flashlight (torch)  I tried out the resin and it worked very well. You just need to drip the resin into the divot and hit it with the UV light. I saw on GSW's video so it didn't surprise me that when you hit the resin with the UV light, you may see a little puff of "smoke."  The strangest part was that I got a definite whiff of the cleaner Pine-sol. Weird...

I was thinking about adding a tint to the water, as with a lot of things post apocalyptic, everything is supposed to be dirty and ruined. But I figured I made a lot of things dirty so I left this pristine. Thinking too much...  ;) 

The other big thing that went on was I took the rifle/hand into the kitchen, boiled some water in a frying pan, let it come to a boil and then shut the flame off. I gave it a minute or so and then dropped the rifle in.  I left it for tens of seconds and pulled it out of a the water with a spatula.  Having done this a bunch of times I've realized that the resin feels different - a rough kind of feeling.  Having previously turned the cold water on in the sink, I straightened out the bend in the rifle and held it under the cold water until the rifle no longer felt warm. aah, nice and straight.

The next step was to start painting. For the base of the wood I used Red Leather. The wrapping is the same Dark Sand base coat.  Where there will be metal, those spots got a coat of gloss black. I think I'll be using gunmetal for paint. We'll see... Check back and find out. Thanks for looking. 

Good Grief 3

Moving forward, I turned to the base for this session.  It was painted in NATO Black, and then misted with Chocolate Brown.  I also had to add a little "dirt" around his feet to mate up with the base better. The 3rd thing was to take some basket liner fibers and create dead shrubs. I drilled holes into the base, filled it with black Mod Podge, stuck the fibers in, and then sprinkled sand over the top. Once the Mod Podge dries, it'll all be glued in place, and I'll come back with more NATO Black to blend everything.

Moving on there are a few divots on the base that could double as puddles. I recently picked up this resin from GreenStuff World that almost instantly cures with UV light -

Before pouring in the resin I gave the light a few clicks. Nothing. Opening it up - Duh - no batteries. Why would I think it would come with batteries. When I go downstairs I'll have to get some.

Staying on a roll I added a few more of the parts to the figure and except for the rifle/hand which came in warped. I'll have to heat up the water, and straighten it. Once straight all that's left is to glue the wrist to the arm and then attach the arm to the should. Then he'll be done. Check back for that. Thanks for looking.

Good Grief 2

More progress is being made on the kit. Base colors are done, and some of the washes were added in places and highlights added in others.

It's also time to start putting the parts together.  His head, arm and back pack were added to the torso and I started messing with the base to get his feet to fit a little better. Snoopy's fit is pretty good.

Good Grief

Good Grief is a very well done kit by Good Fellas Resin. It is a 3D representation of an illustration by Max Dunbar of  a real life looking, grown Charlie Brown and Snoopy in a post apocalyptic scene -

 Each year, my model club, the Brooklyn Plastic Model Society has a Pledge Nite. On this night everyone is supposed to pick a model that they will have built by the October meeting. In theory it assure that the modeler will build at least one model in the year. I have no problem with that, but in any event this kit is my Pledge model.

The kit comes in about 15 parts of white resin. There is a few bubbles, and the seam lines appear easy to make disappear. Nothing that anyone familiar with resin kits can't handle. Having the kit in my stash so long I didn't remember that I didn't have a "before" pic.  Here it is with it primed and some of the base coating done. Not shown is a fairly hefty rocky base.

A little more base coating, plus I got tired of looking at Charlie's black eyes, so I painted those in. ;)
