Thursday Throwdow for 7/25/19

The rules changed up a bit. Instead of a 3 day throw down, it's a week now, and instead of the chance to win a prise, Troy feels that people are intimadated if a prise is offered. So you just get an "atta-boy."  Fine by me.

This week's title was "Curse of the Living Wig". The night before the challenge, I saw Ahh-nold's Total Recall on TV.  So when the theme came up I thought of the way the host would go under while Quato would do the speaking.  My host is an Indian Shaman, and she's in a trance while her hair becomes conscious.  There's even an eye in the back to cover her 6.  LOL Thanks for looking.

Needful Things' Leeloo

This time we have the Supreme Being from the film The 5Th Element.  This is a a 1:5th scale kit in white resin. Being that it was an older kit, it did have some seam lines and pinholes, but nothing anyone familiar with garage kits couldn't handle. She's dressed in her thermal bandages as she appeared right after she was reassembled. The base which is hard to see now are 4 connected tiles representing the 4 stones.
The face is a pretty good likeness

Starting to clean the kit up, the first thing noticed was the pretty big hole at the bottom of her hair. No worries a little Aves filled the void, and then a little sculpting remade the hair strands.

The assembly was next and her head and arms went on with little trouble.

This was one of those kits where I built a little, put it aside and the came back to it a few days or weeks later, did some more, put it away again, etc...  I think it was the amount of skin and the seam lines that needed to be filled and have disappear into the paint that gave me pause. I must admit that this is one of my few 3 foot models. It's going to look good from 3ft feet away, but get closer and yeesh! some of the seam lines I just couldn't get rid of...

So her paint job is going to be basically a skin tone, orange hair and then the white bandages, The stones are a tan/brown color so that's what was done.

During this time, my A/C in the attic dies, and I had to leave it for a few days. When I came back to it, the oddest thing - cracks appeared in certain places. In the creases under both breasts and across her back had these hairline cracks. I never considered the heat until just now, but it was weird seeing them. Vallejo's plastic putty made short work of them tho, and I was able to quickly repaint.

After a quick shot of matte clear coat I went to work on the stones base. The base was fairly smooth. Starting with the darkest brown I had I gave it a coat. Then with progressively light shades going up to a buff I sponged on the colors creating as much texture as I could. Finally I got Vallejo's Brown wash and in the a/b gave it a mist coat. I needed a little something else, so I took V's black wash and did the edges and the seams of the stones. With that I was done.  Leeloo makes a nice addition to my meager 5th Element collection.  Thanks for looking.

The color variations of her hair is washed out in this pic. Sorry.

Thursday Throwdown 7/17/19

For this week's throw down is "Area 51 Escapee."  My idea was for the escapee to hide in plain sight.

Thurday Throwdown 7/6/19

This weeks Throw Down was Not Your Ordinary Zombie. TBS (or is is TNT) channel uses every holiday as an excuse to run a Star Wars Marathon. So after watching 2 days worth of a Galaxy Far Away, I decided to do Zombie Yoda.

Then to make things "right" again Haha, I did Yoda as you would regularly see him. I thought I had white synth air, but didn't and ordered some. So he'll be bald until next week.

Death Knight Avenger

This is a 75mm kit from Black Sun Miniatures. It comes in 8 parts and made of gray resin. It's very well don with no bubbles and hard to see seams.
Getting started I knew I wanted to make her armor red metallic, so the first step is to prime the figure in Gloss Black. Then I added V. Chrome as a base, and then a thinned red -
After the red dried I added more chrome highlights ... and then decided I didn't like it. So it all got covered with more gloss black. It was then I discovered that Green Stuff World had a series of paints that already came as a colored metallic.
I ordered the colors that I didn't have in the Vallejo range, and while waiting I painted her face.

The paints came rather quickly and looking at the red colors I got, I didn't like them either. One was too pink, the other too light a hue. Time to change my mind. So purple it is.

Practiced my wood grain on the back of the shield

While I was waiting for all this to dry, I turned my attention to the base. I comes with 3 steps and a skull. But I had to add more. I randomly added a few pieces of foam, surrounding the stairs to a foam base. I forgot where I got that pile of skulls from, but I found it's place. Cool.

Watching another miniature painter on You Tube, he mixed Mod Podge with black acrylic paint to add as a base coat. It' makes things strong and the Mod Podge protects the  foam.  Miliput was also added as a floor, and then I rolled it with a cobblestone ROLLING PIN from Green Stuff World. These rolling pins are terrific and have a few different ones now.

I painted the blocks with various colors of Gray. I then added a few colors to the cobble stones to united the figure with the base.
V. Terrain Paste was used to cover where the rolling pin didn't make an impression. I added the figure and was calling it done. Thanks for looking.

Beetle From Kubo & the 2 Strings

First time I saw this MOVIE it instantly became one of my favs. It's a story of a young boy named Kubo who must locate a magical suit of armor worn by his late father in order to defeat a vengeful spirit from the past. One of the characters he comes across is Beetle.

I really liked this character and decided to throw some clay together hopefully coming close to what he looked like. Thanks for looking.
